John L. Person has been involved in trading for over 32 years, which includes experience as a floor trader, broker, branch manager and working with George Lane, generally credited as the developer of stochastics. That experience is reflected on his web site and in his Bottom-Line Newsletter, several trading courses and an active schedule of seminars and webinars.
Although he incorporates fundamental developments, seasonals/cycles and various technical analysis techniques into his trading recommendations, Person’s niche on which he has built quite a reputation involves a combination of candlestick chart and pivot point analysis. He has written three books on this approach, including A Complete Guide to Technical Trading Tactics: How to Profit Using Pivot Points, Candlesticks and Other Indicators.
Pivot points are based on a time period’s high, low and close to produce support and resistance levels. Some regard pivot points as a self-fulfilling prophecy, but even if that were the case, Person contends enough professional traders know and follow those numbers closely, even in an electronic age, to make them a valid consideration in market analysis.
Person uses these numbers in his Market Direction System related to a specific moving average based on the close, the pivot point and the market direction number to identify if a market condition is bullish or bearish. Pivot point values reflect where a neutral market condition might be and, therefore, the range for the period.
Among the niftiest features on the NationalFutures.com web site are the pivot point and Fibonacci calculator pages. Enter the price high, low and close for a designated period and, presto, the pivot points for R (resistance) and S (support) levels and the values for Fibonacci retracements and extensions pop up immediately. Person calculates these points for the day, week and month, and the confluence of pivot points from several time periods provide solid points for trading recommendations that he updates on his web site daily, in the weekly Bottom-Line Newsletter, or in one of the live seminars that he presents around the country.
It is always difficult to evaluate an advisory service for www.TraderPlanet.com members because, to many traders, it is only as good as the performance of the last trade or the last month or the last year. But what one can say with assurance is that Person’s methodology pinpoints both time and price targets for his newsletter and his TradingTriggersUniversity courses and provides a sound, timely approach to determine where the key market points are in today’s volatile conditions.
