Cup and Handle

A price chart continuation pattern that identifies a Consolidation period followed by a Breakout.

Currency Pair

Two currencies which comprise a foreign exchange rate. For example, USD/CAD.

Currency Risk

Also known as Exchange Rate Risk, it describes the probability of currency value depreciation and the adverse affects on the investor's portfolio.

Current Income

The objective to provide high dividend or annuity payments from a conservative portfolio to satisfy an investor's steady income needs.

Current Assets

The value of all assets that can be converted to cash within a year.

Custodian

A financial institution that is responsible for protecting a client's financial assets to mimize risk of theft or loss. 

Daily Chart

A visual display of a financial instrument's price activity in intervals of one day.

Dark Cloud Cover

A Candlestick Chart pattern that signals a bearish trend, where a black candlestick forms just after a long white Candlestick.

Dated Day

Specifies date where newly issued bonds begin to accrue interest.

DAX

A acronym for the German index of the 30 leargest stocks on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

Day Order

An order to buy or sell a security prior to close of trading for that day. The order is cancelled if not filled.

Day Trading

A trading strategy which involves opening and then closing out all trades prior to market close within a single day.

Deal

A live trade transaction completed at current market price as opposed to an order.

Debentures

A type of bond that is unsecured - not secured by physical assets or collateral. Commonly used by governments and corporations to raise capital.

Debit Balance

The amount of funds an investor must have in their margin account following a successful purchase of a security, to settle the transaction.

Debt/Equity Ratio

An indicator of a corporation's financial leverage. Calculated through dividing long-term debt by common stock shareholder's equity.

Declaration Date

The day where a corporation's Board of Directors meet to announce the date and amount of the next dividend payout.

Declining Issues

An informal reference for stocks whose prices have fallen over a period of time.

Declining Volume

The number of stock shares traded for a given day where prices fell.

Defensive Stock

A stock whose stable performance is not correlated with overall stock market performance.
