Stocks closed lower Tuesday after climbing back from an early plunge, giving the benchmark S&P 500 index its fifth-straight loss.

Major indexes pulled back sharply in early trading, wiping nearly 550 points off the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Traders blamed worries over slowing growth in China and costs related to President Donald Trump’s trade policies.

On Tuesday:

The S&P 500 fell 15.19 points, or 0.6 percent, to 2,740.69.

The Dow lost 125.98 points, or 0.5 percent, to 25,191.43.

The Nasdaq slid 31.09 points, or 0.4 percent, to 7,437.54.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks gave up 12.91 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,526.59.

For the week:

The S&P 500 is down 27.09 points, or 1 percent.

The Dow is down 252.91 points, or 1 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 11.49 points, or 0.2 percent.

The Russell 2000 is down 15.45 points, or 1 percent.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 67.08 points, or 2.5 percent.

The Dow is up 472.21 points, or 1.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 534.15 points, or 7.7 percent.

The Russell 2000 is down 8.92 points, or 0.6 percent.
