It’s one of those days with bonds falling in concert with equities. The VIX is up moderately but days like this can be head scratchers. TLT and other bond ETFs are due to go ex-div on Aug 2 but you must be a holder of record on Aug1 to pick up the payout. You can actually close open TLT positions on Aug 2 and still receive the div and this strategy can be productive for short term traders who are willing to risk some exposure for 3 days. The trick is to get an entry price that is below the exit price + the dividend payment. TLT typically rebounds on the ex-div day but it’s smart to look at the current short term trend before sticking your neck out on this play so you don’t get trapped in a downswing. Thursday’s coming up fast so this is a chance to watch the action unfold.
