Crude Oil, United States Oil ETF (USO) price whipsawed back down below its 50-day SMA on 9/20/13, thereby turning systematically neutral again (from bullish).

Gold, SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) price whipsawed back down below its 50-day SMA on 9/20/13, thereby turning systematically bearish again (from neutral).

Health Care stock sector ETF Relative Strength Ratio (XLV/SPY) whipsawed back up above its 50-day SMA on 9/20/13, thereby turning systematically bullish (from neutral).

Utilities stock sector ETF (XLU) absolute price whipsawed back down below its 50-day SMA and 200-day SMAs on 9/20/13, thereby turning systematically neutral (from bullish).

On Friday, U.S. stock market price indexes started the day on a downside gap and continued to erode all day. Stocks have surrendered all of their gains since the Fed’s “no tapering” surprise on Wednesday and are back down below their highs of 8/2/13.

The S&P 500 Composite Index (SPX: 1,709.91, down 0.72%) closed below the open, below the midpoint of the day’s high-low range, but still above its widely-watched 50-day and 200-day SMAs.

NYSE total volume rose 27% to a level 39% above its 200-day SMA. Generally, rising volume confirms the direction (up or down) of a price move, but falling volume may indicate diminishing power behind a price trend, which can suggest a price reversal ahead.

The Cumulative Up-Down Volume Line on the NYSE and the Cumulative Daily Advance-Decline Line on the NYSE both declined again on Friday, for the second consecutive day. Both remain systematically bullish above 50-day and 200-day SMAs.

Short-term, day-to-day price momentum spiked to “overbought” on Wednesday and then pulled back. A false breakout on Fed news is one possible interpretation. Failure to follow thorough immediately would not rule out another upside try, however. For the medium term and long term, SPX rose above all previous highs on Wednesday, 9/18/13, suggesting bullish price momentum in all time frames.
