There is not much going on in the market the rest of this week, and I did suggest everyone relax, take some time off, so I will follow my own advice. Before beginning my “holiday,” though, I will leave you with two contemplative thoughts.

The first is about how the world markets are vastly changing. Transformation everywhere is opening up opportunity, but nowhere is transformation more relevant to the future of competitive markets offering opportunity than it is in China.

  • China has approved a pilot scheme allowing private companies to piggy back on the country’s three dominant telecommunications providers to offer own-brand mobile services, opening the world’s largest mobile phone market to increased competition.

China’s opening the door to more competition in its vast telecommunications sector is good for competition, but it is also good for global innovation in a sector that is rapidly becoming a shell of its former self. Small, nimble, and innovative companies are reforming the industry. These companies are a turning a once uneven playing field dominated by giants into a more level place filled with competition. In this is opportunity.

  • Zhone Technologies (ZHNE) makes networking equipment for telecommunications. But they are really more about making the word “telecommunications” an anachronism. Telephone traffic is what coined the “tele” family of words in our dictionary, but the goal of communications technology has for many years been about converging telephone into the more important information streams.

Enjoy the rest of this year, savor the year that was, and think forward into 2014. Get ready to take advantage of opportunity for some time to come.
