Ecolab Inc. (ECL) has entered into a marketing pact with global research and technology-based life sciences, materials and energy company DuPont (DD). Under the deal, the companies will market new antimicrobial (substance that destroys or inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi) coating technologies for the food and beverage processing industry. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The food processing industry currently faces considerable challenges in controlling molds and pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes that cause infectious diseases. Processors are constantly seeking better ways to control surface contamination. The collaboration aims at mitigating the risk of environmental contamination by enhancing food facility hygiene.

Ecolab remains focused on bringing new technologies that are aimed at reducing food safety risks. The new anti-contaminant technologies have been designed to offer innovative sanitation by offering premium antimicrobial coating solutions which can be easily applied and removed from surfaces in the food processing facilities.

The companies have already commenced limited-scale market trials of the new antimicrobial coating technologies across North America and Europe. Negotiations are currently underway with regulatory agencies to secure the necessary marketing approvals in the U.S., Canada and the European Union.

Minneapolis-based Ecolab develops and markets products and services for the hospitality, foodservice, institutional and industrial markets. The company offers cleaning, sanitizing, pest elimination, maintenance and repair products as well as systems and services. Ecolab provides infection prevention products through its United States Cleaning and Sanitizing (USCS) segment.

To boost growth, Ecolab continues to invest in strategic areas such as, product innovation, healthcare, water and energy and global pest elimination while rationalizing operating costs. Moreover, Ecolab remains committed to fortifying its relationships with distributors in core markets. The deal with DuPont further demonstrates the company’s increased sanitation awareness.
