Jim Cramer is much-maligned and has many haters as well as some fans, but the haters are much more vocal. The message boards are rife with anti-Cramer rhetoric, mostly from people who claim to have lost money because of him. They may or not be true, but I want to discuss what I think is Cramer’s biggest strength and how it can help you.

Trend is Your Friend

History has shown us that the trend is your friend in the stock market as well as most financial assets. Once a trend gets established, it sometimes takes a lot to break it and the most money is made by the ones that are earliest to the trend. I think Cramer is excellent and latching onto a trend and staying much longer than others can.

During the current bull run, he has been bullish since the beginning and has stuck with that stance. Even during that minor hiccup, he has remained resolutely positive. On his website, Realmoney.com, he penned a piece called “I’m Still a Buyer” which talked about the market being overbought now, but that he would buy any dip that ensues.

It takes a lot of guts to stick your neck out, even when things appear to be frothy. This is especially true with individual stocks. He has been a big fan of such momentum favorites such as Netflix (NFLX), Apple (AAPL), Deckers (DECK), and F5 Networks (FFIV) for many points now and would have made readers a lot of money had they listened. I for one, do not have to fortitude to hold stocks that have made such big runs, but one must in order to realize gains in excess of 100%.

What Can You Learn?

I think the main takeaway from Cramer’s fortitude is to have conviction in your investing decisions. As long as the fundamental thesis of your stock is intact, continue to have that stock in your portfolio. If you are concerned about valuations, make some partial sales, but continue to hold the stock. This is the only way to make multi-baggers. No matter what your opinion of Cramer is, this is one thing you can pick up from him to improve your investment results.
