One of my favorite books on credit is Maxed Out: Hard Times In The Age Of Easy Credit. The book was written by James Scurlock. The author traveled extensively around the country and interviews rich and poor people to find out about their use of credit. The book is filled with stories of individuals whose lives were destroyed by poor financial choices. Scurlock takes a look at the debt ridden culture that has taken over the country.
I read Maxed Out in the spring of 2008 and found the book to be an interesting read. This book is an easy read and is not technical in nature at all. I read the book in a few hours one weekday night. The book was written before the financial crisis when cheap and easy credit almost led to the downfall of the United States economic system in 2008.
If you want to get an inside look at the nefarious practices of credit card companies and collection agencies then you should read Maxed Out. Maxed Out explains how Americans became so addicted to credit. The author looks at how we are are conditioned to finance our lifestyles using debt from an early age. Politicians and government agencies are in the back pockets of banks and many financial institutions due to the massive amount of money spent on lobbying. The people that are the most preyed upon by lenders are those that can least afford to pay.
