ABB Ltd. (ABB) has entered an agreement with Energie Wasser Bern to provide its integrated electrical and process control systems for construction of a new plant for burning waste materials in Switzerland. The planned waste incineration facility will be an integration of a clean biomass-fired power station and combined cycle gas turbine plant, the first of its kind in Europe.

The new plant will be built in place of a thirty-five year old, scrapped, waste incinerator. Apart from providing its electrical and process control systems, for improving the operating efficiency of Bern facility, the company will also be responsible for providing high-voltage power grid connection to Bern, capital of Switzerland. The plant is expected to be completed in 2012.

The new plant will burn about 110,000 metric tons of waste and 112,000 metric tons of wood annually, generating nearly 250,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of thermal energy and 338,000 MWh of electricity per year. Through this plant, Bern will meet a substantial portion of its demand for power internally. The waste incineration facility is an important part of Bern’s plan to develop eco-friendly and sustainable solutions for power generation and waste management.
