Varian Medical Systems (VAR), a leader in oncology-related devices and software, will showcase its latest TrueBeam medical linear accelerator used for rapid and efficient cancer treatment at the European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) exhibition to be held in Barcelona next week. In line with its objective, a fully-loaded TrueBeam system will be the showpiece of the company’s exhibits.

Varian is a leader in developing technology that promotes the ability of clinicians to deliver rapid and more efficient oncology treatment. The company is enjoying favorable product developments like TrueBeam and Gated RapidArc, along with a series of ancillary items. It believes the innovations that it will exhibit at Barcelona will be both clinically-proven and commercially viable.

Varian’s TrueBeam system utilizes a number of technical advances to dynamically synchronize imaging and patient position, with delivery of treatment. The TrueBeam platform is a versatile system, which may be utilized for multiple forms of advanced external-beam radiotherapy such as, intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery (IGRT and IGRS), RapidArc radiotherapy, and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). This product line also comprises the TrueBeam STx, specially adjusted for advanced radiosurgery.

The TrueBeam system, when utilized in its high intensity set-up, can deliver doses of up to 2,400 monitor units per minute, which is over two times faster than any other system for either radiosurgery or radiotherapy. The planning process for such quick delivery of treatment is facilitated by the current version of Varian’s Eclipse treatment planning system, which the company will also showpiece next week.

Varian will also present, in Barcelona, its latest Gated RapidArc capacity, which enables utilization of RapidArc know-how in conjunction with respiratory gating. This is a process of switching the beam on and off, to synchronize with the patient’s breathing cycle, either during radiosurgery or radiotherapy. This technology is superior to others as it enhances the precision with which treatment is delivered by compensating for the movement of the tumor.

Varian competes head-to-head with Accuray (ARAY) and TomoTherapy (TOMO) in the radiation oncology market. Besides producing oncology-related products, the company also caters to X-Ray imaging requirements for cargo screening and industrial inspection. We currently have a Neutral rating on Varian.
