Harris Corp. (HRS) received an order from Miami-Dade County, Florida, to upgrade the county’s public safety and public service communications system as part of an overall communications project. The total order size is $100 million. Harris will provide 800 MHz radio communications system including radio terminals for the county to comply with FCC’s new re-banding mandate.

The Public Safety and Professional Communications business of Harris develops communications systems and equipment for federal, utility, commercial and transportation markets. The company supports over 500 systems throughout the world. Acquisition of M/A-COM generated significant synergies for Harris’ existing land mobile radio business.

The global public safety market is currently going through a transition from analog, singleband, proprietary operating system environment to digital, multiband, open operating system environment. Integration of high-end solutions of M/A-COM will enable Harris to gain a strong foothold in the $9 billion global Public Safety and Professional Communications market.

Harris’ new Project 25 to the power of IP will serve more than 80 agencies and 31,000 users throughout the county. This project will operate in parallel with Miami-Dade County’s existing EDACS system and will upgrade the existing users to digital network without any interruption. The primary reason to install this project is to deploy a latest state-of-the-art radio communications system for the county with considerable cost advantage.
