So, it would appear that these hearings on Geithner’s role in the AIG bailout and tampering of disclosure documents is being used to craft a message to the public that it was only through the heroic actions of our policymakers at the height of the crisis that we are still here today.

Kanjorski closed his 5 minute dialogue with Geithner asking if mistakes were made during the crisis, and Geithner replied affirmatively. The mea culpa Kanjorski asked Geithner to fess up to was framed as “mistakes.” What is bothersome about our lawmakers on Capitol Hill is that the whole financial crisis was nothing more than a series of mistakes, that nothing criminal occurred during the events leading up to the crisis and that nothing criminal happened in the midst of the crisis, or that nothing criminal happened afterthe crisis.

In a line of questioning later on in the hearings, Geithner claimed also that it would be a “grave mistake” to undermine the independence of the Fed….
