Yesterday Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) announced the launch of a new practice that will work with telecommunication providers and assist them in developing and setting up successful application programming interfaces (APIs).
Alcatel is making their methodology for APIs available to a wider audience through a Creative Commons license. The service itself is aimed at helping providers develop their services in an efficient way that is as streamlined as possible.
The API service seems like a reasonable move on their part. Alcatel have previously received awards for innovation and this is something they are proven to be good at. The company also owns a website that serves as one of the biggest portals offering API solutions, which it obtained in 2010.
ALU stock has been in a harrowing state lately. With share price tumbling down over the last few months and stockholder investments vanishing into thin air, management seems to be unable to plug all holes where money is leaking out.[BANNER]
Alcatel announced that they plan to cut expenses by EUR1.25 billion by the end of next year and are laying off 5000 employees, roughly amounting to 6% of their total workforce, in what looks like a desperate attempt to keep this ship afloat.
The launch can hardly have an impact dramatic enough to be a game changer for Alcatel but at least it shows that the company has not given up and is trying to get back on track despite all issues.
