This week’s sector selector is lopsided towards the bearish side. While the overall market has a solid run last week, the gains did little in terms of improving the outlook for most sectors. In fact, many industries look worse than they did before.
And for those pieces of the market that actually improved, half can be described as defensive sectors, another sign that the Wall Street is skittish and believes more turbulence is coming.
Toss in George Soros and the head of the IMF saying the Euro has less than three months for Germany to bail everybody else out (do they have the money?), and the ride between here and labor day could get like a cheap motel mattress, real uncomfortable.
Understanding where under and over performance relative to the S&P 500 can be a lifesaver for your portfolio. You could consider finding an exchange traded fund that matches up with a sell sector, short it and buy an equal amount of SPDR S&P 500 (SPY). As long as SPY outperforms the shorted ETF, the trade will profit no matter what the market does.
