Recently, ABB Ltd. (ABB) bagged a contract for its state-of-the-art power distribution management system from the Ministry of Electricity (MOE) in Iraq. Therefore, Baghdad’s power supply will be improved and will become more reliable through the advanced communication technology, together with monitoring and control functions of the new system.

ABB’s Network Manager SCADA DMS (supervisory control and data acquisition distribution management system) software will be employed for upgrading the existing control center. The software to be used is a part of Ventyx portfolio of ABB. The operations at the distribution grid will be smoothened and any faults will be easily detected with the renovated control centers.

Communication equipment and RTUs (remote terminal units) for power control and supply in populated areas of the country will also be provided by ABB. The project also involves training of operators. The project enables economic and social development of Iraq and is a part of several such initiatives underway.

Moving ahead, the emerging markets will be a significant growth driver, with a need for high efficiency power transmission technologies. Demand in mature markets is also expected to improve. Customer capital expenditures have increased with the rise in commodity prices. Increased capacity in some later-cycle infrastructure-related businesses continues to exist. In many sectors, price stability has been attained. ABB has increased its prices to offset the increasing raw material costs.
