ABB Ltd. (ABB) will be supplying equipment worth $38 million for a pooling station, called the Champa transmission substation, in Chhattisgarh, India. The contract has been granted by the Powergrid Corporation of India Ltd., which intends to construct a stronger national grid in India. Besides, Power at 765 and 400 kilovolt (kV) will be received by the planned pooling station.

As per the contract, ABB will be designing, engineering, supplying, installing and commissioning 765 kV and 400 kV switchyards for the power station, together with the civil works. Circuit breakers, current transformers, capacitive voltage transformers, surge arrestors and protection, control and relay panels are among the key products to be provided by the company. Open standards based substation automation system, named IEC 61850, facilitates communication between the numerous devices within the substation and beyond, will also be supplied by ABB.

In India, inter-state transmission system is supervised and controlled by Powergrid, the central transmission utility in the country. About 86,190 km of transmission lines and 138 substations are owned and operated by Powergrid, with total transformation capacity of about 95,125 MVA (mega-volt-ampere). More than half of the total power generated in the country is by Powergird.
