Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) recently announced that it has delivered its 8000th AN/UYQ-70 combat console suite. This is indeed a landmark achievement as this suite is currently installed on 90% of the U.S. Navy’s commissioned ships.

The Q-70 console suite will be installed on the USS Minnesota (SSN 783) Virginia-class submarine to upgrade combat control and navigation systems. The system is a command workstation that permits operators to display combat control and navigation decision data onto high definition displays located in the command and control center, and provides real-time situational analysis.

The Q-70 family of workstations is the first fully implemented standard combat computer system resource using a state-of-the-art open system architecture. This flexible, tactical workstation is configured using high-performance COTS modules housed in militarized enclosures.

The Q-70 can be installed in airborne, surface, and submarine platforms to fulfill multiple combat system tasks. The Q-70 provides a cost-effective protection of prior hardware and software investments. Q-70 products support numerous operational requirements for sailors.

In May 2009, Lockheed Martin had delivered its 7,000th AN/UYQ-70 (Q-70) combat computer server suite to the U.S. Navy’s Command, Control, Computers, Communication and Intelligence Program Executive Office (PEO-C4I) in San Diego.

Since the Q-70 program was competitively awarded in 1994, Lockheed Martin has continued to upgrade these units with open architectures and the latest commercial technologies.

Lockheed Martin is the largest U.S. defense contractor with a platform-centric focus, a steady inflow of follow-on orders and a leveraged presence in the Army, Air Force, Navy and IT programs. However, the ongoing trend of governmental delays in program decisions coupled with program cancellations has affected the fortunes of the company.

The company presently retains a short-term Zacks #3 Rank (Hold) that corresponds with our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock. In the near term, we would advise investors to accumulate its short-term Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy rating) peer like Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica S.A. (ERJ).

Based in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services.
