Unilife Corporation (UNIS), a manufacturer of retractable syringes, recently reaffirmed plans to start early-stage production of the Unifill prefilled syringes later in March 2011. The company will then commercially launch the product for its pharma clients by the end of June 2011.

Earlier in the month, Unilife commissioned the “cleanrooms” at its modern production plant located in York, Pennsylvania. After meeting this regulatory requirement, Unilife is now on the verge of starting production of its Unitract and Unifill safety syringe products from this location. This includes the final qualification of manufacturing systems required for assembling the Unifill syringe. As part of its overall plans to start production at the York facility, the company has decided to build an inventory of components.

Once early-stage production takes off, Unilife expects to conclude penultimate product qualification related tasks in the second quarter of 2011. Accordingly, the company hopes to take initial sales orders from pre-existing pharma clients before the end of June 2011.

Unilife is in the process of holding discussions with a number of pharmaceutical companies who have shown interest in its syringe. It is anticipated that these pharmaceutical makers will buy from the early production lots, in order to conduct their own formal appraisal of the product, before entering into a commercial agreement with Unilife.

Re-domiciled in the U.S. in January 2010, Unilife is a medical devices company that designs, manufactures and sells retractable syringes. Its patented syringes provide integrated safety, which is designed to protect patients from needle stick injuries. It competes with Becton, Dickinson and Company (BDX) among others.
