Okay every one, now is the time for all good traders to stand up and speak. I received the following question, and I thought it might be best to seek some responses from any of you. I will answer it, but my answer is, well, limited to me. If more than one of you responds, the questioner will receive a broader array of answers, which, of course, will provide more information, which, of course, will better educate the questioner.
I am a college student working on a project concerning traders, so I thought you might be the perfect person to ask. I was wondering who traders talk to every day- basically, what kind of people they need to interact with everyday in order to do their job and do their job well, as well as how often they talk to these people. I was also wondering if you could tell me if access to certain other people quickly would be beneficial, and if so, to which people and why. Thank you!
I am a lone wolf trader. I talk to no one about trading on a daily basis. I gather my information from reading and listening, so, I am not the “trader” you seek to learn about. I suspect there are lots of folks such as me out there trading, but, and as well, I know there are others who trade on a much different level. Me thinks the trader you want is the professional trader, the trader who trades for others, perhaps, as well him or herself, who trades from an office in some building, as opposed to trading from an “office” in one’s home.
You see, in the world of computerized trading, trading from your home office has become a way of life for many. Now, this does not mean any one of us cannot pick up the phone and talk to anyone we wish about trading, nor does it mean that we cannot open an email dialogue with anyone about trading. In fact, I do talk with my mentor, oh, about, once a week. We discuss general market and economic conditions, and, sometimes, we talk about a specific potential trade, or a trade in progress. So, yes, I do talk trading, and I do interact with someone, just not on a daily basis. I find this is helpful to me because it opens my mind; it clarifies my thinking; it points out what I might be missing; and it helps me to understand the big picture.
So, how about it you traders out there? Can you enlighten the questioner? Am I correct about the lack of interaction for you other “lone wolf” traders, those of you who sit in front of your computers located in the privacy of some room in your home? Please, take a bit of your time and comment in this column. This eager student needs your help …
