Recently, ABB Ltd. (ABB) expanded its reach in India with an investment of $50 million for building new manufacturing facilities for high-voltage products and transformers. Through this investment, the company will be able to fulfill the needs of Indian customers by developing, manufacturing and marketing products locally. Local production will ensure fast delivery of products at economical rates.

The new facilities will be engaged in manufacturing high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and PASS (plug and switch system) hybrid switchgear as well as dry-type and oil immersed distribution transformers and will be located in Gujarat, western state of India. Operations at these facilities are scheduled to start by the end of 2012.

The GIS technology of ABB can be installed in 90% lesser space compared to the conventional air-insulated switchgear. The technology can be operated in harsh environment with its low-weight and robust design, making it reliable, efficient and effective.

Further, a hybrid switchgear solution, called ABB’s PAAS, possessing a complete switchgear bay in a single module, requires installation time of just few hours. Moreover, Vacuum cast coil dry-type transformers and oil immersed distribution transformers will also be manufactured by the new transformer factory.
