AXP said defaults, or charge-offs, came in 3.5 percent of balances on an annualized basis for April, down from 3.7 percent in March as AXP kept its position as the issuer with the lowest default rate. Late payments, or delinquencies, dropped to 1.7 percent of balances in April, from 1.8 percent the prior month. AXP had the industry low late-payment rate, at 1.7 percent. Amex’s charge-off rate topped out at 10.4 percent in April 2009, a full year before the industrywide rate peaked at 10.9 percent, according to Federal Reserve data.
