Our Gadget Of The Week: The Promising Playbook
It looks and feels great — and its smallish , 7.5-by- 5-inch size isn’t much of a minus because it lets this tablet fit into a coat pocket. But the phrase that best describes the BlackBerry PlayBook, which goes on sale Tuesday, is ” good, but could be — and will be — better.” Could the stock double?
There is lots to like right now. The touch- sensitive screen’s swipe
controls work brilliantly and intuitively. The browser is very quick and, unlike
the iPad, PlayBook runs Adobe’s Flash software, so most Web pages display as
expected. The screen is bright, clear, responsive and big enough for watching a
movie or playing an action game.
There are a few built-in applications, including a photo and video viewer,
music player, camera and book reader — and a store to buy and download music.
There are also apps to access popular mail sites (Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) and
Facebook and Twitter. Best of all, there are apps to create and open Microsoft
Office documents.
But if you expect to find everything you want, you’ll be disappointed.
None of the BlackBerry smartphone apps work on the tablet, and the available
apps are relatively few.
For now, you can link to the Web only via Wi-Fi, not 3G cellular. That
limits where you can use the device, but the problem will be solved with
PlayBook 2. The bigger issue is there’s no program that automatically downloads
e-mail and shows your phone’s contacts and calendar. For that you must “tether”
the tablet to your regular BlackBerry by Bluetooth. My bet: PlayBook 2 will fix
it.
Meanwhile, corporate IT departments — BlackBerry’s key customers — will
love it, since the tablet and smartphone both have top-notch security.
