Aerospace and defense giant The Boeing Company (BA) unveiled the new 747-8 Intercontinental on Sunday, February 13. The latest from Boeing’s 747 line of airplanes, the 747-8 International is touted as the largest passenger aircraft built by the company that is all set to revolutionize air travel.

This new 747-8 model only retains the iconic shape of the first 747, but is by far more advanced than the initial 747’s rolled out from Boeing’s factory. The latest from Boeing features cutting-edge breakthroughs in aviation technology, akin to the 787 Dreamliner, featuring new wings, a brand new body and engines. Consequently, the airplane would improve upon fuel efficiency by 16% and reduce carbon emissions by another 16%.

This ground-breaking model would furnish vastly superior interiors adding to the comfort of the passengers. The 747-8 Intercontinental would carry more passengers and cargo further and faster than any airplane of its class. The new engines would lower the sound emission by 30% compared to previous versions.

The 747-8 Intercontinental will undergo a series of tests to prepare for its maiden fight in early spring.  Lufthansa Airlines of Germany has already signed to be the first customer for the 747-8 International, with a view to upgrade and modernize its fleet.

We believe this brand-new, next-generation airplane, capable of flying 467 passengers in three class configuration, will compete with A-380 from its international commercial airspace rival Airbus.

Boeing’s fourth quarter 2010 earnings of $1.11 per share missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2 cents. The company expects 2011 operating earnings per share to be in the range of $3.80–$4.00. The Zacks Consensus Estimate, for 2011, currently pegged at $4.12 per share, is higher than the company’s guidance.

The company competes with the likes of General Dynamics Corp. (GD), Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) and Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC). The operating earnings per share of its peers in the fourth quarter 2010 bested the corresponding Zacks Consensus Estimates.

The Boeing Company currently retains a Zacks #4 Rank (short-term Sell rating).

Based in Chicago, The Boeing Company designs and produces commercial airplanes, defense systems and civil and defense space systems.
