Recently, BorgWarner Inc. (BWA) introduced a cutting-edge friction plate technology for the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. This novel technology will enhance the performance and efficiency of the motor vehicle gearbox. The automatic transmission was initially launched in 2012 Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro and will also be introduced in Audi A6, A8 and BMW 5-series hybrid vehicles.
The advanced friction plate technology will provide improved mechanical stress resistance along with outstanding reliability. The combination of friction technology and ZF transmission will lead to development of state-of-the-art technology, which will simultaneously ensure low emission standard while maintaining the comfort level. Therefore, the transition from electric motor to combustion engine will be smooth.
The friction plate technology is used in BorgWarner wet separating clutch and the launch clutch. The separating clutch is designed for engaging and disengaging the electric motor to work either individually or simultaneously with combustion engine. On the other hand, the launch clutch is used for replacing the conventional torque converter and will provide similar performance with respect to comfort and thermal load capacity.
Both the clutches of BorgWarner are equipped with stable friction coefficient and improved temperature resistance. This was driven by the company’s initiative in developing new groove designs along with usage of advanced friction materials.
