I was watching the Office last night and saw an interesting concept. Ryan aka the temp created a program that would contact all of your social networking devices at once. A person would receive a message on their cellphone, home phone, work phone, fax, Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. The concept was called WUPHF. This would obviously get a little annoying after while but it is still a great concept. So, why I am bringing this up?
I found this episode particularly interesting because I suspect that someone is working on a program like this at this very moment. Smartphones, apps, and social media were the big winners of the past decade. Now we have to look forward for the next great thing. We have a tendency to get enamored with ideas that are already discovered and forget about the next great invention.
Do you remember when MySpace dominated social networking? Rupert Murdoch and News Corp. never saw Facebook coming when they ponied up over $580 million dollars for the site. They believed that Facebook would remain the dominant social media company. Now, MySpace is an afterthought.
Do you remember just a few short years ago when doing an Internet search meant going to Yahoo? Today, Google has entirely taken over the search engine market. The company is now so dominant that when you search for an item, you say I am going to Google it.
Do you remember when a computer from Gateway was considered top of the line in the 90′s? Today, Gateway is barely a player in the PC market having been acquired by Acer for just $700 million dollars. HP, Dell, and Apple now dominate the direct sales marketplace.
There are countless other examples. Blockbuster was once the king of movie rentals. Sears & Roebuck was once the country’s largest retail channel. Palm invented the smartphone with its Treo models.
You may be asking yourself, so what is the point? Well, I am getting to it! My point is that you just might be the person that creates the next great business that captures the hearts and minds of the public. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel to do it. You just need to take an existing concept and make it better.
Facebook may be hot now but I doubt the company will be the dominant social media site by 2020. Everyone is tweeting right now but a new form of communication will come along and take the country by storm over the next few years.
The entrepreneurial spirit is part of what made America great. It’s the ability to venture out and take a risk against all odds. Some of the country’s greatest entrepreneurs started with nothing except for a dream. All it takes is a positive attitude, persistence, and a consistent work ethic to reach the greatest heights of success.
What idea do you have that could become the next WUPHF.com?
