Highlights based on trading on Tuesday, June 19, 2012:
Tuesday was a big news day. Eurozone members of the Group of 20 leading economies reportedly agreed to drive down borrowing costs, and the media was full of hope for Fed easing. It seemed almost as if all the world’s problems could be solved if only the monetary authorities would fire up their printing presses and just pump out more and more Quantitative Easing. But did the12-day rally price in new QE already? And what will stocks do if there is no new QE?
The S&P 500 (SPX: 1,357.98) rose 13.20 points or 0.98% on Tuesday. SPX crossed above its 50-day SMA (simple moving average), thereby turning systematically bullish. (Note that whipsaws are common.)
NYSE volume rose 17%, suggesting somewhat greater demand for stocks. Volume patterns generally have been bearish for months, however, with a tendency toward lower volume on rallies and higher volume on declines, indicating the dominance of selling pressure over buying pressure.
Short term, over the past 12 trading days, stock price indexes have recovered a Fibonacci 61.8% of their losses from April highs to June lows. That is a relatively large retracement for a counter-trend minor correction.
In Dow Theory, Minor Ripple price fluctuations typically last only one day to three weeks. The Minor Ripple fluctuation is ignored as insignificant noise by the Dow Theory.
