A leading provider of data storage systems EMC Corporation (EMC) unveiled new integrated backup products to enable customers accelerate backup design process.
EMC launched new EMC NetWorker backup software integrated with EMC Data Domain Boost software. The integration is expected to increase backup speed up to 2 times by distributing parts of the de-duplication process to the NetWorker storage node.
In 2009, EMC acquired four companies, of which the most important was Data Domain, a premier provider of storage solutions for backup and archive applications based on de-duplication technology. The acquisition of Data Domain provides higher synergies and positions EMC as a leader in the enterprise storage and backup market.
We believe the acquisition will be accretive to 2010 pro forma EPS. The acquisition is expected to increase revenues at significant double-digit rates, given that the company expects to achieve $1.0 billion in revenues in 2010 from both Data Domain and Avamar products.
The new product integration will also simplify configuration and management, including scheduling and visibility of all backups at both primary and secondary locations. These also comprise support for separate retention policies, management pointed out.
The NetWorker Management Console software offers control for Data Domain system functionality, including Data Domain replication for scheduling and monitoring backups at all sites. EMC also announced new productivity enhancements for NetWorker users, such as checkpoint restart, simplified cloning and new disk load balancing and space management capabilities.
EMC was the overall storage software market leader with a 22.7% market share in calendar year 2009, for eight consecutive years, according to research firm IDC, followed by Symantec Corp. (SYMC) (17.9% market share), International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) (13.5%), NetApp Inc.(NTAP) (8%) and CA Technologies (CA) (4%). EMC was also the number one vendor of external storage sales for 2009, followed by IBM and Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ).
The information storage business is EMC’s largest segment (76.0% of fiscal 2009 revenues), which will get a boost from its market leadership position. As per IDC, EMC occupied the first position with storage sales of $1.30 billion in the second quarter (ended June 2010), a 40.6% year-over-year gain while its market share rose year over year from 22.0% to 25.7% in the same quarter.
