As per the latest data published by the technology research firms IDC and Gartner Inc., global computer shipments increased more than 20.0% in the first quarter of 2010. More precisely, Gartner published a figure of 27.4%, while IDC concluded the growth rate to be 24.2%.

These figures exceeded the expectations of both the firms, and happened as a result of increase in tech spending by both retail consumers and business enterprises. According to IDC and Gartner, PC shipments reached 79.1 million units and 84.3 million units, respectively during the first quarter.

As per the figures published by IDC, Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ) still rules the computing world, with the largest market share of 19.7% and registering a unit shipment growth of 19.9%. Surpassing Dell, the Taiwanese computer manufacturer Acer grabbed the second position and registered a staggering growth in shipments of 42.5%, with marketshare of 13.6%.

Dell Inc. (DELL) and Lenovo secured the third and fourth positions, respectively with shipment growth of 21.1% and 58.3%, picking up market shares of 13.3% and 8.8% respectively. These figures foretell that the companies will report significantly improved results in the first quarter. The technology research firm also projected the fiscal year 2010 PC shipment to grow by more than 15.0%

. Recently, Gartner also forecasted strong IT spending numbers for 2010. The firm is bullish on the sector and expects a revival across the globe. It has forecasted that spending on technology products and services will reach $3.4 trillion in 2010, registering a growth rate of 5.3% compared to the year-ago quarter.

So while the indications are all positive for IT companies, it remains to be seen whether they will meet or exceed expectations in the upcoming earnings season.
