Stocks closed lower on Wall Street Friday, leaving the benchmark S&P 500 index with its worst weekly showing since January and its eighth loss in the last nine days.
The wave of selling followed a disappointing report on hiring by U.S. employers, the latest sign of weakness in the global economy. Energy companies led the market’s slide as crude oil prices declined.
On Friday:
The S&P 500 dropped 5.86 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,743.07.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 22.99 points, or 0.1 percent, to 25,450.24.
The Nasdaq composite declined 13.32 points, or 0.2 percent, to 7,408.14.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies gave up 1.74 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,521.88.
For the week:
The S&P 500 dropped 60.62 points, or 2.2 percent.
The Dow fell 576.08 points, or 2.2 percent.
The Nasdaq lost 187.21 points, or 2.5 percent.
The Russell 2000 gave up 67.76 points, or 4.3 percent.
For the year:
The S&P 500 is up 236.22 points, or 9.4 percent.
The Dow is up 2,122.78 points, or 9.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 772.86 points, or 11.6 percent.
The Russell 2000 is up 173.33 points, or 12.9 percent.
