Strong results from major companies including Microsoft and Visa helped U.S. stocks bust out of another losing streak Thursday. The rally wiped out part of the market’s plunge from the day before, but stocks are still down sharply over the past three weeks.
On Thursday:
The S&P 500 index climbed 49.47 points, or 1.9 percent, to 2,705.57.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 401.13 points, or 1.6 percent, to 24,984.55.
The Nasdaq soared 209.93 points, or 3 percent, to 7,318.34.
The Russell 2000 index leaped 31.70 points, or 2.2 percent, to 1,500.40.
For the week:
The S&P 500 is down 62.21 points, or 2.2 percent.
The Dow is down 459.79 points, or 1.8 percent.
The Nasdaq is down 130.69 points, or 1.8 percent.
The Russell 2000 is down 41.65 points, or 2.7 percent.
For the year:
The S&P 500 is up 31.96 points, or 1.2 percent.
The Dow is up 265.33 points, or 1.1 percent.
The Nasdaq is up 414.94 points, or 6 percent.
The Russell 2000 is down 35.11 points, or 2.3 percent.
