Orthopedic implant devices maker Exactech (EXAC) recently reported the successful debut of its new porous metal acetabular system and surgical technique for hip replacements. The new hip system dubbed the Novation Crown Cup, and technique have been designed to enhance initial stability and long-term biological fixation of hip replacement implants.

Surgeons at the Ohio State University, Columbus, and Northside Hospital-Forsyth, Atlanta, performed the first implants and reported excellent experiences with the new system and technology.

The Novation Crown Cup system is geared for primary, complex primary and revision hip arthroplasties (surgical repair of a dysfunctional joint). The system has been built upon significant innovations in porous material, implant and instrumentation designs.

The Novation Crown Cup system features Exactech’s third-generation porous material “InteGrip,” which is being manufactured with a titanium alloy using the company’s unique manufacturing process. Exactech noted that the initial launch of the new hip system is underway in the U.S.

Gainesville-based Exactech develops and markets orthopedic implant devices. Its orthopedic products are utilized for the restoration of bones and joints that have degenerated due to diseases. Apart from the U.S. the company markets its products in more than 30 other markets globally.

Exactech’s revenues in second-quarter fiscal 2011 rose 9% year over year to $51.7 million. The company registered strong growth across its hip and extremity product lines with revenues zooming 15% and 36%, respectively. However, its biologic and spine sales fell 13% in the quarter.

Exactech competes with the likes of  Wright Medical Group (WMGI), Stryker Corp. (SYK), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and Zimmer Holdings Inc. (ZMH), some of whom are much larger in terms of size and resources.
