Thanks to the great recession, we have all been given a tremendous gift. Like it or not, the new economy has forced each of us to examine our lives and to determine what’s really important to us.
Here’s what I’ve learned from observing hundreds of clients:
o If something is really important to us, we’ll figure out a way to make it happen. If the conventional approach to accomplishing your goal or dream doesn’t work, human nature being what it is, you’ll figure out another way to make it happen.
FOLLOWING DREAMS
Here’s what Walt did.
He grew up in southern Florida around boats all of his life. One of Walt’s dreams is to own a yacht. I’m talking a 75′-100′ yacht. Unfortunately for Walt, he wasn’t born into wealth nor will his current occupation provide the financial resources necessary for him to purchase his own yacht. Did this stop him from achieving his goal…absolutely not! For a while, Walt was a cook on a yacht — one of Walt’s hobbies.
A friend of his was the captain on a 75′ yacht, and before you know it, Walt had his captain’s license and became the captain of his very own yacht. Actually it’s not his yacht; the owner hired him to run his 75′ yacht. Here’s the really neat part, the owner is on the boat no more than 30 days out of the year. Guess who has access to the yacht year round?
So today, Walt is living his dream life as the captain of a yacht! Even better, he gets paid to do it. And the best part of all? When the yacht breaks down and needs repairs or maintenance, Walt just sends the bill to the owner.
BE HONEST
This, my friend, is the gift the recession has given you. It’s forced you to be brutally honest with yourself — focusing only on the goals and dreams that really are important to you. Your secret weapon to accomplishing what’s really important to you isn’t money, winning the Lotto or receiving a large inheritance. Your secret weapon is your subconscious mind!
WRITE IT DOWN
When you take the time to actually write down on paper your goals, the ‘things’ that are really important to you, you are embedding this into your subconscious mind – the most powerful computer ever. It never stops running even when you’re sleeping. Ever wake up with the answer to a problem, or the answer to a question “appear out of nowhere?” That’s your subconscious mind at work.
But you have to be careful about how you feed your subconscious mind. You need to give it “good goals.” An example of a bad goal would be, “I want to retire when I’m 55.” A good goal looks like this:
o “I want to be retired by November 29, 2021 with a monthly income of $ 8,000.00, net after taxes and inflation.”
BE SPECIFIC
Think about your top two or three most important goals and dreams. Make sure to write them down and be specific so you can unleash your secret weapon on them. If the economy isn’t cooperating, don’t let that hold you back. It didn’t hold Captain Walt back from becoming the captain of his own yacht.
