Sears Holding Corporation
(SHLD), the fourth largest broadline retailer in the U.S., recently opened a new namesake outlet in Dublin, Ohio. The store will feature well-known global brands in appliances, tools, fitness equipment, TVs, mattress sets, and lawn & garden at 20%−60% discount to the retail price. It will also showcase Lands’ End apparel at 60%−80% off the retail price.

The merchandise offered in the outlet usually bears some irregularities that prevent the items from being sold as new. Consequently, branded appliances are available at fire-sale prices. The outlet receives new shipments of merchandise throughout the week and prices are continually marked down to encourage customer footfall.

The strategic move to offer discounted items at Sears’ outlets augurs well for the company as its top line has been adversely affected by continuing macroeconomic headwinds, which has compelled customers to slash discretionary spending and postpone plans for big-ticket items. Furthermore, sluggish conditions in the automotive industry coupled with a rapid deterioration in the home improvement industry have also negatively impacted the company’s top-line performance.

Sears offers home appliances, tools, lawn and garden equipment, electronic devices, apparel, automotive repair and maintenance products through a countrywide network of approximately 3,900 retail stores. The Illinois-based company’s brands include Kenmore, Craftsman, DieHard, Lands’ End, Jaclyn Smith and Joe Boxer.
