Singapore market opened slightly higher, with STI up 13.04 points to 2894.40. However, market back peddled early gains, and traded lower after 09:30…

Other Asian stock markets were mostly higher on Monday, but gains were modest. Investors will be watching the Fed’s policy statement on Tuesday. The central bank is widely expected to leave rates unchanged near zero, and retain its commitment to leave rates on hold for a while.

  1. Hong Kong Chinese car and battery maker BYD Co gained after posting a forecast-beating quarterly profit.

  • Singapore January Retail Sales grew 2.3% yoy, following a decline of 4.9% in December. The decrease for December was revised from 5%. January’s growth was larger than the consensus forecast of 1.1%. (Read Full)
  • Singapore Technologies Telemedia will pay RM1 billion for a 33% stake in U Mobile Sdn Bhd, including subscribing to a rights issue by the Malaysian 3G mobile services provider.

  1. India Feb WPI inflation at 9.89%
  2. Hong Kong shares ended lower for a second straight session on Monday, dragged down by weak mainland shares. China Shenhua Energy retreated after reporting a quarterly profit that was below expectations.

In Summary,

Market finished lower after 5 consecutive of up days upon facing the challenge at 2900 resistance, and on cue of Hong Kong’s loss on weak mainland shares. High chance that we will see market consolidates from here before re-exerting strength to challenge 3000 level.

Index down 7.03 points to close at 2874.33, with 1.0273 billion traded.
