Watching the market is like watching a yo-yo in slow motion. One should always be careful about what they ask for, but c’mon, how about a little commitment? I know, I know, the near horizon holds plenty the market will commit to, such as the ECB and its plan to halt bond investors fleeing Spain and Italy. Yes, yes, patience. One step at a time …

The Spanish government and European Union officials are in agreement on the general terms for creating a bad bank to hold toxic real estate assets.

Directly related to the ECB and the bond yields in Spain, the reparation of the banks in Spain will go a long way toward easing investors fear about a financial collapse. If you are not looking at moving money into Europe, perhaps you should at least consider it. Yes, one step at a time …

What is your take on AT stock? Is it a good investment or am I looking up the wrong tree?

I assume the reader is referring to Atlantic Power Corporation (AT). If so, this stock seems fundamentally flawed, at least at first glance. As of 6/30/2012, its financials showed a -20.99% drop in in profit margin, a -13.79% drop in return on equity, and a -150.19 m in levered free cash flow. As well, the short ratio as of 8/15 is 11.40%. Oh, and one more thing – the overall debt and cash on hand is not a pretty picture.

Now does any or all of this mean the company is a bad long-term investment? Not necessarily. AT is sure to be around for a while, it does pay a dividend, and it in its latest conference call, the CEO does paint a picture of impending growth. If I were looking at this stock for an investment, I would track it closely to see what management does to improve the financial picture, I would track the news regarding its alternative energy projects, and I would watch the “Insider Purchases.” Right now, that picture is not clear …

The ten largest economies in Asia now spend roughly $400 billion a year on research and development (R&D)–as much as America, and well ahead of Europe’s $300 billion.

Some might see the above as bad news for America, but I don’t. The world is getting smaller and global trade, especially with Asia, is growing larger. The current economic push from the current administration is to build stronger ties with the countries in the Pacific Rim.

One reason why spending in Asia has risen is that American firms nearly doubled their R&D investments there in the decade to 2008.

If you are not looking at moving money into Asia, perhaps you should at least consider it.

Sometimes, I just cannot resist the urge to throw reality back at the doomsayers. Back in January, and at various times since, I listened to more than a few “analysts” tell the world that 2012 would be “The Year of the Big Foreclosures.” They told us the US real estate market would crumble under the weight of the millions of foreclosures banks were sure to drop on the market in 2012. Well, in the latest report, housing prices are rising and …

When prices rose in the past few years, they were drowned out by foreclosures. This year foreclosures have been dropping, too. In July, there were 58,000 completed foreclosures in the U.S., down from 69,000 a year ago.
