Stryker Corp. (SYK) recently reported that two of its manufacturing facilities have been awarded the prestigious ‘Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design’ (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable building design and construction.

USGBC’s LEED rating system is a widely popular green building certification system. It provides a benchmark for design, construction, operation and maintenance of green buildings. LEED offers building owners and operators a comprehensive set of tools they require to have a measurable impact on building’s performance.

To achieve LEED certification, builders should focus on improving performances across certain key parameters such as energy savings, water efficiency, improved indoor environmental quality, energy efficiency and innovation. In essence, LEED rating plays a pivotal role in creating energy-efficient buildings, which moderates environmental harm.

Stryker is one of the world’s largest medical devices companies operating in the global orthopedic market. In the orthopedic space, it competes with major players such as Zimmer Holdings Inc. (ZMH), CONMED Corp. (CNMD), Smith & Nephew (SNN), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), and Wright Medical Group, Inc. (WMGI).

Stryker recently resolved two warning letters issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding compliance issues related to its reconstructive implant manufacturing facility in Cork, Ireland, and implant products distribution facility in Portage, Michigan. The company took corrective actions at both these facilities and received a clean certificate from the FDA.

Stryker’s Portage facility has become the first manufacturing facility in Michigan to earn a Silver designation in the LEED rating system for Existing Building Operations & Maintenance. Moreover, the company’s facility in Suzhou, China, has secured a Gold designation in the LEED rating system for New Construction. The LEED certification represents a major recognition of Stryker’s commitment to design, operate and manage its facilities in a more effective, sustainable and an environment-friendly manner.
