Some days the inspiration for this column arrives with the simplest question. Witness the question below – simple and inspirational.

What is an anti gravity chair?  It sounds really cool.

Anti-gravity chairs are the next evolutionary step in the comfort line of reclining furniture known as lounge chairs, ya know those long chairs that fold up and have several vertical slant positions, the ones found on every beach resort in the world, around every pool and backyard everywhere.  Yet, they are not the traditional lounge chair.  What makes anti-gravity chairs evolutionary and different is the ergonomic design and the more “sophisticated” locking mechanisms for holding certain comfort positions.  The chair is labeled “anti-gravity” because the purpose of the design is to take the weight off your back when you recline.  When in the steepest recline position, your feet are just barely above your head and your middle body is resting in the curve of the chair.  It is quite relaxing and comfortable, however, I must give you one, important caveat – drinking anything from this position is not advised.  A “whoops” and laugh is natural the first time you attempt to consume your beverage from the steepest position.  The next time, the words coming from your mouth will carry more frustration and self admonition, for sure.  The good news is that if you are a quick study, it may only take you a couple of times dribbling your beverage on your chest before you “get it” that the steepest recline position is for relaxing only.  In the end, though, despite this design flaw, the chair is really “cool.”

And some days the inspiration for this column arrives with the most profound question.  Witness the question below.

I have been trading futures for the past 3 years, but, unfortunately, I am not a consistently profitable trader.  It is so very frustrating.  Can you recommend a course that will really teach me to trade profitably?

The answer to this question derives straight from the ant-gravity chair design flaw – how many times must you dribble on your chest before you figure out that having your feet slightly above your head will not lead to drinking success? After three years of inconsistent success, it is high time you decided to figure out what you are doing.  Then again, perhaps you know what you are doing, but you are not good at it, which is something to consider seriously.  In any case, it sounds to me that your frustration is leading you to look “outside” yourself for that “thing” that will make you more consistently successful.

Although I cannot recommend a specific course for you, I will say a specific course on trading futures might help you identify your holes, but after three years of trading, I would think you have the mechanics down, so the problem is probably not there.  This leaves your strategy and your mindset to examine.  Again, a specific course might well help you identify a consistently successful strategy, but finding a course to address your mindset is another story.  Now we are talking psychology. Certainly, there are courses out there that will help you understand your trading mindset, but ask yourself, “Do you need one of those?”  You just might, but before you take that leap, get yourself an anti-gravity chair, place it in a quiet spot with no distractions, and think about how you approach each trade.  My guess is a little self examination is what you need, and if I am right, the cost of the chair will be a lot less than the cost of any course you take.
