I wrote a post a few weeks ago about all of the millionaires in Congress. Nearly 45% of the members of Congress have a net worth of $1 million dollars or more. That post looked at all of the millionaires as a collective group.There are over 238 millionaires in Congress. Today, I want to look at the three richest members of Congress.
Number one is Senator John Kerry. Kerry is listed as having a net worth of just below $200 million dollars. Kerry’s wealth comes from his inheritance and ketchup. That’s right ketchup! He is rich in his own right as the beneficiary of four different trusts from the Boston Forbes family. The majority of his net worth is tied to his wife. He is married to Heinz ketchup heiress, Teresa Heinz Kerry. John Kerry’s net worth may be severely understated as it is estimated that his wife has a net worth that is either just under a billion dollars or slightly over it.
Number two is Representative Darell Issa. Issa has a net worth of $160.5 million dollars. Issa built his fortune as an entrepreneur founding Directed Electronics. An electronics company that manufactures car alarms. Nearly half of Issa’s worth is tied up in DEI and Greene Properties. Issa is an active investor owning several million dollar mutual funds and real estate investment ventures.
Number three on the list is Representative Jane Harmen. Much of Harmen’s wealth comes from family trusts and her husband’s company Harman International Industries. This is the company that is responsible for creating Harman Kardon, Infinity and JBL audio equipment. The total value of her fortune is estimated at $152.6 million dollars.
