Turkcell (TKC) announced that that it will collaborate with Turkey’s Directorate General of Coastal Safety for its “Remote Management of Lighthouses” project.
During the first phase of the project, Turkcell will provide communication between 185 lighthouses and the control center based in Istanbul. The number will go up to 430 by the end of 2011. Turkcell’s best quality, wide coverage will allow seamless data transfer between lighthouses while decreasing the communication distance between lighthouses and boats by up to 10 times.
According to statistics provided by The Minister of Transport, Binali Yildirim, 55,000 to 60,000 vessels or boats pass through the Bosphoruses every year. Turkcell’s ability to deliver mobile coverage and communication even in remote locations will allow the government to provide a strong communication infrastructure for lighthouses.
During the period of economic downturn, Turkcell managed to add a half-million “post-paid” subscribers—those on contracts who receive monthly bills rather than prepaying for service via scratch-off cards or other means. Billed subscribers spend, on average, 3.5 times as much per month on mobile services as do prepaid. Turkcell has also managed to move over 25% of its customers to postpaid contracts, compared with just 14% for Vodafone Turkey. That lets Turkcell earn the highest margins among the three Turkish mobile operators, the other two being Vodafone Group Plc (VOD) and Avea.
Turkcell is the leading Mobile operator in Turkey with 36 million postpaid and prepaid customers as of Sept 30, 2009 operating in a three player market with a market share of approximately 56% as on that date. Turkcell, is the technology leader providing EDGE technology across the country. Turkcell also provides high quality data and voice services to 65% of the population through the implementation of its 3G technology.
