Seems like an easy enough question to answer but I bet there are some out there who haven’t taken the time to really label what sort of a trader you are. Now labels aren’t permanent and it’s a fairly obvious statement that your trading will grow and evolve as the markets continue to change. But I thought it would be cool to have a post where everyone could shout out to fellow readers what sort of trader they are. Links are welcome in this thread as long as you are providing value of some sort.
When describing your trading style be as description as you want. I’ll start it off.
I’m a momentum trader who specializes in market timing. I focus on the major indexes first and try to position my portfolio and ride the trends in the general markets. My typical holding period is a day to a few weeks. Rarely do I hold positions longer than that or use options. I almost always scale out of trades in halves or thirds. Mental stops work better than me than hard ones.
I use candlesticks 95% of the time but I am branching out a little with 3line-break for a alternate view without time as a factor. I mainlybuy stocks hitting new highs, unless I’m playing a specific pullback pattern. I use the wkly/daily to check historical relevance, and the 15min/60min to time my trades.
My trades are systematic, but with discretion. It would be a shame to train my eye to look for certain patterns and then not use them…
One thing I’d like to do better is partition a section of my portfolio for longer term trades, but I don’t know if I’m wired for that.
