For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL – September 1, 2010 – Zacks.com Analyst Blog features: Motorola Inc. (MOT), Google Inc. (GOOG), China Mobile Ltd (CHL), China Telecom Corp. Ltd (CHA) and China Unicom Ltd (CHU).

Here are highlights from Tuesday’s Analyst Blog:

Motorola Merges Android with MING

Motorola Inc. (MOT) recently launched three MING smartphones in China based on the Andriod operating system of Google Inc. (GOOG). Motorola developed its MING series of mobile handsets especially for China and starting from its launch in 2006; these mobile phones enjoyed an iconic status among the Chinese users.

The newly launched three smarthones will be used in Chinese 3G networks. The handsets are (1) MT810 for China Mobile Ltd’s (CHL) TD-SCDMA network (2) XT806 for China Telecom Corp. Ltd’s (CHA) CDMA-2000 network (3) A1680 for China Unicom Ltd’s (CHU) WCDMA network.

Motorola is benefiting from the significant market acceptance of Andriod as the next-generation 3G smartphone operating system. Motorola handsets feature an intuitive user interface and an efficient combination of Internet access, messaging, and multi-media applications based on the Android ecosystem. Currently, more than 6,000 multimedia and social networking applications are available on the Android ecosystem. Motorola is trying hard to expand this platform using its proprietary MOTODEV program.

Currently Motorola’s Chinese portfolio consists of 11 Android-based 3G smartphones, which together accounted for more than 50% market share. Chinese wireless market is highly lucrative. With respect to wireless subscriber base, China constitutes the largest market in the world with around 750 million of mobile subscribers. This figure may go up to 1.22 billion by 2014. However, 3G subscriber base is still less than 10%.

The battle for supremacy for the smartphone market has resulted in very quick product upgrade and innovative offer plans. Smartphones are gradually becoming the next-generation choice taking over market from basic mobile handsets. This lucrative market opportunity has attracted a lot of players some of which are having natural low-cost structure. For the Chinese market, additional advantage of Motorola is its existing MING series. More than 5 million of MING handsets are already sold in China since 2006.
