Chicago, IL – February 23, 2010 – Zacks.com releases the latest Zacks Industry Rank. Stocks featured in this week’s analysis include Cree (CREE), Vishay Intertech (VSH), Coherent (COHR), Broadcom (BRCM) and Applied Materials (AMAT).

Zacks Industry Rank Analysis is written by Dirk Van Dijk, CFA, Chief Equity Strategist for Zacks.com.

Put Yourself “In the Chips”

We track 255 different industries, and as a result, there are many different “semiconductor industries” within them. However, 8 of them are no worse than tied for 34th place, if one includes the closely related semiconductor equipment industries.

Many of these industries are quite small, with only 2 or 3 firms in them, and thus I would normally not mention them. After all, the Zacks industry ranks are based on the un-weighted averages of the individual Zacks ranks of the firms within the industry. If you only have 2 firms in the industry, it is easier to be at the very top or the very bottom of the list than if there are 30 firms in the industry.

However, collectively these 8 “industries” have a total of 41 firms in them. Of the 41 firms, 9 hold the coveted Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) and 15 hold a Zacks #2 Rank (Buy). When you consider that only the top 5% of firms get a #1 rank, and the top 20% have either a #1 or #2 rank, having 22% of the firms with Zacks #1 Ranks and an additional 37% holding number #2s tells you that there is something significant going on.

At the same time, smart phones are rapidly gaining penetration both here and around the world. In other words, there is a lot of demand for chips now, and there will be more as the world economy strengthens.

The 9 Zacks #1-Ranked semi and semi equipment firms are Cree (CREE), Vishay Intertech (VSH), Coherent (COHR), Broadcom (BRCM), Applied Materials (AMAT), among others. There is a nice mix of large, mid and small cap names. Buying them just might put you “in the chips.”
