The Consumer Price Index increased by 0.2% in January, lower than the expected 0.3%, to an index value of 216.687 (1982- 84=100), after increasing by 0.4% and 0.2% in November and December of 2009. Over the year the CPI has increased by 2.6% before seasonal adjustment. The seasonally adjusted increase in the all items index was due to a rise in the energy index, which increased by 2.8% and is up by 19.1% over the year. The food index increased by 0.2% in January, after rising 0.2% in December 2009, bringing down the food index over the year by 0.4%. Excluding food and energy prices, the Core CPI decreased by 0.1%, as against an expected increase of 0.1%, after rising 0.1% in December 2009, and has advanced by 1.6% over the year.
