Morning Highlights

Singapore Stocks opened slightly higher today, with the STI up 4.06 points to 2937.62, after US industrial shares lifted the Dow and the S&P 500 to new 15-month highs overnight.

  1. Olam has agreed to buy 99.5% of the outstanding shares and voting rights in Crown Flour Mills Limited (“CFM”) with its wheat milling and noodle manufacturing facilities along with accompanying additional assets for a total purchase consideration of US$107.6 million. Crown Flour Mills Ltd is amongst the three largest wheat millers in Nigeria, supplying bread flour, noodle flour and semolina to both industrial users and wholesalers in the country.

  1. A Manhattan federal judge on Monday rejected the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s effort to expand its lawsuit accusing Bank of America Corp of misleading shareholders over bonuses paid by Merrill Lynch & Co.

  2. Bloomberg reported that China, the engine of recovery from the world’s worst recession since World War II, reported a 55.9% increase in December imports and supplanted the U.S as the world’s biggest auto market.

  3. The balance of most Japanese banks’ outstanding loans dropped 1.2% in December from the same month a year earlier, the first yoy fall since January 2006, according to Bank of Japan data released Tuesday.
